The Honolulu Rail Transit Project (HART) is a 20-mile elevated light rail line with 21 stations that will connect West Oahu with downtown Honolulu and the Ala Moana Shopping Center and will include a station at Honolulu International Airport. Being built at a cost of more than $5 billion, it will be the first fully automated passenger rail system in the United States and Hawaii's first rail transit project. Passenger service is anticipated to begin in 2019. IEI is part of a Jacobs FTA PMO team, and is responsible for safety and security matters, reviewing relevant planning documents, including the Safety and Security Management Plan (SSMP), to ensure compliance with all relevant federal regulations and help ensure the safe and secure construction and operation of the system. IEI participates in monthly oversight meetings; has conducted onsite audits of adherence to safety and security requirements; has reviewed hazard and threat and vulnerability analyses; and has proposed operating plans for the new service. IEI is also advising HART on safety and security staffing needs in all phases of the project.   [1583]
