Penn Station New York - East End Concourse Design and Constructi
The design and construction of the East End Concourse, NJ Transit's portion of New York's Pennsylvania Station , was undertaken to improve access and egress for commuters, accommodate anticipated future growth, and improve fire and life safety conditions.. During the design phase, Interactive Elements, as a subconsultant to Sverdrup, was responsible for integrating NJ Transit's and Amtrak's operating needs into the design; ensuring that adequate space was provided for them; and specifying the required interfaces between NJ Transit's new facilities and the Amtrak/LIRR Penn Station Control Center. During construction, as part of the O'Brien Kreitzberg (now AECOM) construction management team, Interactive Elements provided several full-time construction structural, mechanical, and architectural inspectors and was responsible for reviewing contractor safety plans and overseeing their implementation. The program achieved an outstanding safety record. The East End Concourse, situated in one of the nation's busiest passenger terminals, includes a new passenger circulating area above the tracks and platforms; it provides access and egress between platforms and the concourse through new stairs, escalators, and elevators. There are new ticketing and waiting areas, improved customer amenities, and a new signature entrance for direct street access for NJT customers.
