Rail Operations Coordination for the Pequonnock-Ely Transmission
Interactive Elements coordinated track outages so that 205 new steel poles carrying high voltage electric transmission lines could be erected over 15 miles of Metro-North's New Haven Line right-of-way. The challenge in this project was to carry out construction activities in a cost-effective manner without adversely impacting the on-time performance of the railroad. IEI developed and supervised the implementation of an innovative plan, acceptable to Metro-North Railroad, which shortened projected construction time and reduced costs. The plan called for the use of helicopters to lower bonnets onto existing structures. This required about 30 minutes for completion, so that work could be done between trains on weekends. As a result, we reduced the construction period from three years to 14 months, saving approximately $4 million. [286]
